Common RV Problems and How to Handle Them

Your RV can make a good weekend great, but at the end of the day it’s still a machine with the same pitfalls of any other. Mechanical issues are almost guaranteed at some point, and it’s important to understand and calmly handle them before they get worse. We here at C&R believe in being prepared, so we’ve put together a list of some common RV problems and how to handle them, below. To learn more, or to see the RVs we have for sale, contact our store in Tremonton, Utah, today!

Toilet

Indoor plumbing on the road sounds good on paper, but it can easily spiral out of control. Your RV toilet empties into a blackwater tank that you need to empty at drainage stations and clean. Not keeping up with that can cause funky odors and worse to leak from your toilet.

The jostling the toilet goes through while the RV is in motion can also wreak havoc on the seals and cause water flow issues. Check your toilet after every trip and address any issues immediately. Also remember not to use residential-style toilet paper or flush anything but RV toilet paper and waste.

Tires

The RV’s tires help distribute the weight and ensure a smooth ride on long highways and bumpy campsite roads, but like any vehicle’s tires, they wear down over time. To avoid any issues before they occur, check your tires before every drive for:

  • Cracks in the sidewall.
  • Low tread.
  • Uneven wear on the treads.
  • Improper inflation.

We also recommend a tire-pressure monitoring system to help you keep track of your tire pressure.

Roof

Your RV’s roof gets hit with a lot, from inclement weather, blazing sunshine, falling leaves and branches, and more. Make sure to clean it off regularly and avoid any buildup of dirt and debris, since this can help moisture build up and cause corrosion over time. Check the roof for cracks, damage, or leaks regularly as well.

Slide-Outs

If your RV uses slide-outs to maximize interior living space, you’ll be balancing the extra comfort with extra maintenance. Make sure to apply a good silicone-based lubricant to the tracks of your slide-out as specified in your owner’s manual, and bring any serious issues to a professional for your safety and that of your RV.

We hope these tips help you overcome these issues before they become serious problems. If you end up needing professional service, or you’re just on the market for a new RV, contact us at C&R Auto & Trailer Sales. We proudly serve the people of Logan and Ogden, Utah—let us serve you today!
